Greenwich ballroom ticket - 1789

Astonishing balls were held in Greenwich whenever the navy were docked. Especially after some great battle when the officers brought home the spoils of war. Mr Frudd's ballrooms in East Greenwich, roughly on the site of where the great power station is now was one of the most celebrated venues - and a ball here will have been known about by Jane Austen because her brother attended. A calamitous fire occured when some candles were knocked over and set fire to some of the dancers dresses. A Miss Blake was badly hurt in the incident and the man she was betrothed to married her sister. The story is often thought to have inspired some of the elements of Pride & Prejudice etc
